Our customers often turn to us for support in bending high thicknesses. There are industries, in fact, that frequently require this type of bending, such as ship or construction sites, steel plants, and the transportation industry.

This is a special type of workmanship that should be considered carefully: thick materials can in fact create abrasion, and the tool tends to wear at a higher rate than in normal applications.

In this article we look at 5 tips for bending thick materials.

How to bend high thicknesses?

1. Use extra care.

First of all, greater care must be taken with this type of machining, considering, for example:

  • the specific tonnage for the application;
  • the dimensions of the punch or insert and the correct die match.

This preliminary moment of analysis and calculation allows thoughtful choices to be made so as to minimize tool wear.

2. Choose "heavy duty" or HD bending tools.

To decrease the risk of premature wear, Eurostamp offers a hardening service for punch tips and die shoulders. This will give the tool a significantly longer life.

Our tools have induction hardening, and nitriding, a surface hardening treatment that increases wear resistance, is available upon request.

These treatments, which create protective layers or alter the structural and chemical characteristics of the tools, result in strong, hard, and long-lived tools.

3. Use adjustable dies.

An effective solution in bending thick materials is to use adjustable dies.

They eliminate the need for frequent tool and die changes, saving time and resources.

Dies normally have a fixed V. Adjustable dies, on the other hand, are bending tools that have an adjustable opening depending on the thickness of the sheet metal.

4. Increase the radii of punches and dies.

Increasing the radius size of punches and dies will allow you to distribute the load over a larger area, reduce the weight isolated on one point and thus increase the life of your tools.

5. Choose high-quality tools.

The quality of press brake tools is critical to have a high-quality end result.

Our bending tools are made only from Italian, special, carbon steel with induction hardening on the wear parts, which gives our products a hardness of 55-60 HRC.
