Choosing the right press brake tools depends on specific criteria and it usually takes more than one step. Let's see which information we need the customers to give.

Preliminary phase: have the customer provide details.

In order to select the right press brake tooling, it is fundamental for the customer to provide the most detailed information regarding their bending requirements. Which information does the customer need to provide?

Here is a list of the details needed to request special custom tools:

  • product drawings and external dimensions (the more detailed this information is, the more precise the project can be),
  • type of material (Kg/mm²),
  • sheet metal thickness (mm),
  • length (mm),
  • type of press brake,
  • quantity.

The material and shape of bends are particularly important aspects. Why is it so?

The material.

It is important to specify which material is going to be bent. Simply indicating "aluminum" is not enough, as there are many different types of aluminum. Different characteristics can impact differently on the bending process. Some aluminum alloys, for example, do not allow any bending. Plus, if the material manufacturer places any limitations, these must be respected. The characteristics of the material must be given major consideration when designing the parts.

The purpose of the product is also important: if the part to be produced is going to be a structural wall, specific criteria must be met, without full freedom of action.

Shape of bends.

Before we start defining which tools we are going to use, it is necessary to find out which shape the customer needs to obtain. In the range of all the possible shapes, which you can see in the following chart, only a few can be obtained by using standard tools:

  • V-bend radius bending (within limits),
  • hemming (within thickness limits); used to create edges that are safe to handle, as it removes the sharp part,
  • offset bend (within limits).

There is also another way to classify bends:

  • double thickness (certain amount of force required),
  • teardrop hem (requires less force as it is partial hemming),
  • open hem (with a defined gap between flanges).
