The previous articles mentioned that the right punch shape to choose depends on the shape of the final product that the clients needs to form.

Therefore, it is fundamental for the customer to provide us with the most detailed information regarding their bending requirements, so that we can choose the most suitable tools for each specific situation. The tool range available for sheet metal bending is varied, and it includes tools that have different shapes, angles, radii and heights.

In a few words, standard punches are divided into two main categories: gooseneck punches and straight punches. We described the main features of each category, in terms of toughness and purpose. We also saw that the same type of bend, such as the so-called "U-shaped" bend, might require different tools each time, according to the base and height measures of each profile to be formed.

Read this article: Relation between tool shape and U-shaped profile.

Let's now focus on another crucial aspect, which connects the tool shape and the final product: the punch height. This, indeed, also affects the dimensions of the final product. Let us see how.

Gooseneck punches.

All other things being equal, a higher gooseneck punch allows to:

  • form deeper flanges
  • form U profiles with wider bases.

The picture above shows the same profile overlapping with two punches with different heights. As you can see, the return flange in the second case could also be longer. The third leg, indeed, does not collide with the tool.

Straight punches.

With straight punches, height plays a very important role when it comes to forming box-shaped elements: in this case, the limit is that the bent legs collide with the press brake upper beam.

The next article is going to focus on a punch's maximum capacity.
